The promotion of the Italian language abroad, is one of Italy’s main foreign policy instruments. Knowing the Italian language is the key to knowing the Italian culture and a better understanding of the “Italian lifestyle”, what is often called “Vivere all’Italiana”. The promotion of Italian becomes more and more a projection of Italian soft power.
In India there is a growing demand for Italian in all learning environments: from the academic world to the Italian Cultural Institutes of New Delhi and Mumbai and also in the context of the Indo-Italian Chamber of Commerce.
There are three Italian-speaking readers currently present in India (located in New Delhi, Mumbai and Hyderabad). They play a fundamental role at their universities, where they often represent the only person of Italian mother tongue and carry out extracurricular activities, often in synergy with the activities offered by Italian cultural institutes.
The Italian Cultural Institute promotes, on the basis of the agreement on cultural cooperation between Italy and India, the teaching of the Italian language at the following Indian universities: Jawaharlal Nehru University (New Delhi), Jadavpur University (Kolkata) and the Universities of Goa, Banaras, Bangalore, Chennai, Kerala and Shantiniketan.
The Institute also organizes Italian language courses at various levels: Elementary, Intermediate and Advanced, as well as Italian culture and conversation courses.
