Access to Energy and Water in Rural India – Institutions, civil society and companies implementing the SDGs Monday 5th October 2020, 12:30-02.10 IST/9:00:10:40 CET

Sustainable development is a multifaceted concept encompassing environmental, economic and social goals and ideally bridging between north and south, between central and local governments, between civil society and business, between science and policy, and between policy and action. Five years ago the United Nations General Assembly adopted the “Sustainable Development Goals” (SDGs) a list of 17 interlinked goals designed to build, by the year 2030, a more sustainable future for all.

How is India facing the challenges of sustainable development when it comes to SDG 6 (access to water and sanitation for all) and SDG7 (access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all)? Which innovative technologies can be proposed to accelerate the implementation of SDGs in rural areas? How can India and Italy cooperate and work hand in hand to build a more sustainable future? To answer these questions, on Monday 5 October from 12:30 IST (9 CEST) the Embassy of Italy is hosting a Digital Panel Debate entitled “Access to Energy and Water in Rural India”. The event is part of the broader “Festival dello Sviluppo Sostenibile”. Speakers will include: Enrico Giovannini (former Minister, full professor at University Tor Vergata and spokesperson of the Italian Alliance for Sustainable Development), Vincenzo de Luca (Ambassador of Italy to India), Bharat Lal (Additional Secretary, Ministry of Jal Shakti), Anna Barra Caracciolo (Senior Scientist Italian National Research Council / IRSA), Malini Balakrishnan, (Senior Fellow, Environment & Waste Management, TERI), Debajit Palit (Director & Senior Fellow, Rural Energy & Livelihoods Division), Annalisa Del Pia (Institutional Relations Manager, Maire Tecnimont) and Lamberto Dai Pra’, (Enel Green Power’s Head of Africa, Asia and Oceania area).

The session will be moderated by Francesca Datola (Ph.D. in Politics, Human Rights and Sustainability, First Secretary, Embassy of Italy).
